I’m Charlie. I have always enjoyed reading, but have a tendency to stick to books and authors I know. Having re-read my favourites time and time again,
I’ve decided it’d be a good idea for me to do a little ‘wider’ reading.
I’ve created this blog, not merely to tell anyone who cares what I think about the books I read, but also to keep my hands from wandering back to my old favourites. I’ve always felt that to sit and read is quite an indulgent pursuit and have to confess that I’m rather looking forward to the prospect. So although this starts out as a somewhat selfish undertaking, I’m hoping that eventually it won’t end up being all about me.

Thanks for liking my post about ‘The Good Man Jesus…’. Have you read the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy – they are fantastic and feature a brilliant female protagonist.
I’m currently reading ‘Cold Mountain’ which has two strong female characters in Ada and Ruby, and so far (about 1/3 of the way through) much richer than I remember the film). I’d also recommend Charles Dickens – they can be heavy going, but the writing and characters are superb. Oh, and Cormac McCarthy. Not big on his female characters, but ‘The Road’ is just about my favourite book of all time, an amazing portrait of a father/son relationship.

Hi, I have read ‘His Dark Materials’ several times, they are brilliant books and you’re right Lyra is a great heroine. I think I might try reading a Dickens book soon (got to get through my pile from the library first though!) – despite having studied English Lit at Uni, I’ve never actually read Dickens so it seems about time! Thanks for your other recommendations too, :-).

Hi Caroline, thanks for the reply. It’d be lovely to hear some of your recommendations – as you can see from my latest post I’m rather despairing of literary heroines at present. Any recommendations for a book with a good female protagonist? I see you’re a teacher, I am too but across the pond from you in England, :-).
